Mahanagar and Abataranika: Adapting story to film
I believe a faithful adaptation is one that captures the soul of the original work and can choose to leave out any details that don’t add to it. I can see that Ray is a master at this.

Ray has absolutely no hurry in narrating the story. It’s a relief to watch his films after all the swishes and jittery cuts of modern cinema.
Pratidwandi Opening Sequence
To me this shot seemed symbolic of life in the city. Of people clinging onto something steady, in a world where things move fast and anything could topple any moment.
